How machine 3 works, in plain words: the set of forty, the four tiers, the draw word for word, what happens with duplicates, where your set is kept and what the coin is for

01The machine

Machine 3 is a capsule toy machine at the end of the hall. You press Turn the crank, the crank goes round once with two clicks, the capsules in the globe shuffle and one drops into the chute. It rolls to the tray, hops onto the stand, the top twists off and the figure stands up

Every turn is free. There is no coin slot, no wallet and nothing to sign. One turn takes about four seconds, and the crank is locked until the figure is on the stand

02The set

Season one has forty figures: eight shapes, each in five hats. The number of a figure is fixed: shape first, then hat

ShapesNumbersHats, in order
Frog#01 – #05Bare, Cap, Beanie, Top hat, Crown. So #01 is the Plain Frog, #02 the Frog in a Cap and #05 the Crowned Frog
Dog#06 – #10
Cat#11 – #15
Bean#16 – #20
Ghost#21 – #25
Bird#26 – #30
Blob#31 – #35
Bot#36 – #40

The one exception is #20. A bean in a crown is not a Crowned Bean, it is The Golden Bean, and it is the only gold figure in the set

The odds are fixed for the whole season and the same for everyone. On average a full set takes about 345 turns, and half of all sets are done by turn 287. Most of that time is spent waiting for the gold

04The draw

The draw is written once in the page code and quoted here word for word

  1. The browser gives one random number from 0 to 1
  2. Below 0.004 the capsule is gold. Below 0.080 it is rare. Below 0.280 it is uncommon. Anything else is common
  3. Inside the tier every figure has the same chance: one of 24 commons, one of 8 uncommons, one of 7 rares, or the one gold
  4. The colour of the capsule top is picked on its own. It tells you nothing about what is inside
  5. Every turn is drawn fresh. A long run of commons does not make the next capsule any better

The draw happens in your browser, the moment you press the crank

05Duplicates

A figure you already have still comes out of the capsule and still goes on the stand. Your set counts it: the card in the set shows ×2, ×3 and so on, and the pull says how many you have. There is no trading and no swapping, duplicates are just proof that you turned the crank a lot

06Your set

Your set lives in this browser only, in its local storage: which figures you have, how many of each, how many turns you made and your last six capsules. Nothing is sent anywhere. Another browser or another phone starts with an empty set, and clearing site data empties it too

KeptWhat it shows
FiguresThe set grid: full figure for the ones you have, a shadow for the rest
Counts×2, ×3 on duplicates, and Your set 12 / 40 next to the crank
TurnsThe turn counter on the machine card and on every saved card
Last sixThe short list under the pull

07The card

Save the card turns your last figure into a picture, 640 by 900 pixels, PNG: the figure on its plate, its name and number, the tier with its odds, its line and the turn it came out on. The gold card gets a coral border. The file is named after the figure number

08The figures

Every figure is built from a handful of simple shapes and drawn live in your browser, the same way as the machine: low resolution, five tones of mint and one coral, ordered dither. Coral is kept for the crown, the crank knob and the gold bean. Nothing in the set is a picture file

Without WebGL the machine and the figures are hidden. The crank, the draw, the set list and the odds work the same

09$CAPSULE

$CAPSULE is the coin of the hall, on Solana. It is the one thing in the hall that does not come out of a capsule. It sits next to the machine, where the coin slot used to be
